What you will do

Key duties will be to understand pertinent industry codes and standards at the state and provincial level with added emphasis on California and the substantial impact on Johnson Controls Ducted Systems ability to operate in the United States and Canada

How you will do it

  • Track, monitor and report on relevant industry codes and standards activities at the state level (with added emphasis on California) that impact Johnston Controls Ducted Systems HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning and controls) products.
  • Work closely with Johnson Controls Washington D.C. based government relations team to track and monitor federal agencies (DOE, EPA, FTC, etc.) regulatory actions which may be the impetus for state or municipality codes and standards actions.
  • Monitor and engage industry trade associations and environmental advocacy organizations that influence and advocate for HVAC codes and standards such as AHRI, ASHRAE, ACCA, HARDI, HRAI, NRDC, ACEEE, CEE, NYSERDA, etc.
  • Monitor and engage regulatory bodies within California and other states (i.e. California Air Resources Board (CARB), California Energy Commission (CEC), California Building Standards Commission (CBSC), California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), etc.) that impact Johnson Controls Ducted Systems Products
  • Work with channel and industry business partners to develop positions that promote Johnson Controls Ducted Systems positions and interest through various standards and code organizations
  • Coordinate regulatory activities with internal Johnson Controls stakeholders as well as external stakeholders (I.e. AHRI, HARDI, ACCA, etc.) when participating in industry public policy initiatives, working groups or when providing official company comments
  • Identify issues, develop clear summaries of issues and recommend strategies to deal with any codes and standards issues that arise
  • Clearly communicate industry standard and code issues to senior management, sales staff, engineering and other pertinent stakeholders as needed
  • Interface with Property Owners, Facility Managers, Building Managers, Engineers, Architects, and Contractors on building code or standards issues as needed
  • Assist in the submission of comment letters, building code waivers or other communications with federal, state and local governments and other industry organizations as necessary
  • Work with sales and engineering to ensure product and building code compliance to ensure acceptability of Johnson Controls Unitary Products for local codes inspectors
  • Provide technical support for code compliance as it pertains to new product specifications, layout, design, and application
  • Compose and present detailed technical discussions to codes organizations, green groups, utility companies, federal, state, and local code organizations
  • Assist engineers with locating and defining codes compliance specifications and standards
  • Obtain and study information about competitors’ products for operation and code compliance

What we look for

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field
  • 5+ years’ experience with mechanical codes and standards development and maintenance at the state or federal level; experience with California specific codes and standards (Title 20 & 24) is a plus
  • Detailed knowledge or experience with HVAC engineering design, laboratory testing, product management, technical sales, applications support or a closely related technical field; detailed knowledge of refrigerants and their applications is a plus
  • Detailed knowledge or experience related to regulatory procedures and certification test requirements for unitary or other HVAC products (AHRI, ASHRAE, UL/CSA/ETL, NEC, etc.)
  • Creative thinker; strong analytical and decision making skills
  • Ability to write clear and professional reports, business correspondence and procedures manuals
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Very effective verbal and written communication skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to prepare coherent and persuasive official company comments to state regulators and legislative committees on issues of importance
