What you will do

The Director Environmental Programs serves as the worldwide leader of the Company’s environmental compliance, EHS audit and assessment program, and due diligence activities. The position supports the Company’s Mergers & Acquisitions team in providing EHS due diligence and integration leadership efforts. This position also provides leadership and support for the company’s global environmental programs that includes the EHS Information Management System, compliance audit program, EHS policies, procedures, standards and other EHS initiatives. The Director Environmental Programs will report directly to the VP, Environment, Health & Safety for Johnson Controls and the position is based in Milwaukee, WI.
The Director Environmental Programs will provide direct support to the various Business Units, and work across the Company dealing with consultants and site personnel to achieve the objectives of the goals developed by the Vice President of EHS and the Corporate Sustainability Team.

How you will do it

  • Ensure the EHS Compliance Assurance audit programs are current, update audit protocols as new businesses and/or risks are identified, and lead the soliciting for bids and selecting consultants to perform the audits.
  • Develop site audit schedules for all Business Units facilities worldwide.
  • Onboard/train new auditors and oversee the quality assurance of the consulting firms and auditors used.
  • Evaluate and analyzes key performance indicators to determine trends and the need for modifications or development of EHS policies, procedures and standards.
  • Ensure EHS audit program is implemented per the Company EHS audit standard, including ensuring findings are entered into an information management system, corrective and preventive actions are assigned, notifications to appropriate management is made and findings are closed and tracked.
  • Provide visibility on environmental progress, performance, and issues to the EHS and executive leadership teams.
  • Work with the Mergers & Acquisitions group on proposed acquisitions and divestures related to EHS matters, including due diligence that could include conducting EHS assessments or audits of target companies.
  • Support the Business Units with compliance issues including but not limited to developing corrective actions to audit findings which could include reviewing current standards and suggesting improvements to global environmental programs/standards. Support the development and implementation of global standards for protection of the public and the environment in the communities where the company operates.
  • Support talent development of EHS staff.
  • Work to foster an atmosphere of openness and information sharing in order to encourage a culture of high awareness, transparency and diligence with respect to EHS matters.
  • Direct the continued development, implementation, and management of appropriate tools, systems, monitoring and reporting procedures.
  • Oversee procurement of EHS compliance audit protocol software/tools.
  • Prepare annual budgets for the EHS Audit Program and prepare monthly summaries of activities and budgets.
  • Support Company’s commitment to transparency by providing compliance audit metrics as required by the Corporate Environmental & Sustainability Department.
  • Support new acquisitions and businesses with integration audits. Contact with relevant government agencies and environmental groups related to compliance audit activates.
What we look for
  • 15+ years’ experience with at least 5 in a management role; corporate experience preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, or other relevant degree (Masters of Science degree is preferred)
  • Outstanding leadership; ability to advocate and gain the trust at all levels of the organization.
  • Outstanding team and talent development and coaching capabilities.
  • Polished presenter who is credible and self-assured; strong technical skills with the ability to explain complex issues and requirements in an easily understood manner.
  • An environmental professional with interpersonal characteristics reflecting integrity, results-orientation, a collaborative style, and a highly positive attitude.
  • Proven capability leading and managing comprehensive programs in a relevant, multinational service and manufacturing environment.
  • A strong business perspective that includes the ability to work with all levels of management.
  • An excellent understanding of relevant laws, regulations and governance requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement new strategic initiatives.
  • Ability to work in a matrixed, team oriented environment.
  • 10-15% travel
