What you will do

The Group Counsel – Litigation, North America reports to the Senior Group Counsel of Global Litigation and serves as a member of Johnson Controls’ Global Litigation Team passionate about providing proactive, efficient and cost effective management of litigation portfolio in the North America region.

The Group Counsel provides litigation support to the in-house litigation team, drives risk management strategy and provides counsel and mentorship to the business. You will also protect Johnson Controls’ interests as the ultimate client and strategically guides decisions to this end.

How you will do it

  • Provide practical, business-savvy litigation support with respect to a wide range of litigation including insured, commercial and environmental matters affecting Johnson Controls’ various business units.
  • Work with team members to investigate, evaluate and effectively counter threatened or pending litigation and disputes.
  • The role requires close coordination and collaboration with Johnson Controls’ outside counsel, technical specialists, and related third-parties.
  • Build and deploy litigation and dispute resolution strategy and implement related tools to drive consistent management of litigation across North America.
  • Drive adoption of best practices including lessons learned, affirmative recovery analysis and other risk mitigation strategies.
  • Assist with selection and management of outside legal service providers, including spend subject area.
  • Coordinate with other key partners, such as Compliance, Risk Management, Finance, and individual business units.
  • Propose and develop legal programs to reduce Johnson Controls’ legal risk exposure.

What we look for

  • JD Degree; must be a member in good standing of a U.S. state bar.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of related litigation experience in a major law firm, a publicly-held multi-national corporation, or both.
  • Experience in commercial litigation as well as arbitrations and mediations is required. Experience in multi-district litigation, construction, products liability and/or asbestos litigation is helpful.
  • Experience handling litigation and arbitrations outside the U.S. is a plus.
  • Ability to make excellent judgment calls under pressure.
  • Consistent track record to collaborate effectively with others in a matrix management structure.
  • Ability to drive process changes, resource efficiencies and change management in the provision of legal services.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with senior management and other members of the legal team and to influence outcomes positively.
