What you will do

The Group Counsel, Labor and Employment Law position for Johnson Controls’ Legal Department is responsible for providing employment and labor law advice for the various client groups throughout the organization. The Group Counsel - Labor and Employment Law will maintain a current in-depth knowledge with respect to all federal, state and local employment/labor laws and regulations. He/she will work closely with the Human Resources functions at the Business Unit and Corporate levels to ensure that Company policies and procedures are in compliance with applicable laws. This position will report directly to the Legal Director, Labor and Employment Law.

The person holding this position will exhibit general business acumen as well as knowledge of the Company’s structure, operations and policies relevant to respective areas of responsibility. This person will be knowledgeable of laws, statutes, regulations and administrative procedures associated with labor and employment law. He/she will have highly effective analytical problem solving skills and an ability to identify and evaluate risk in light of business and practical considerations and make clear recommendations.


How you will do it

  • Providing legal advice and interpreting policies related day-to-day employment law issues, including: fair employment practices, employment litigation, employee discipline, employee drug testing, employee rights, employment at will, employment contracts, federal and state wage and hour laws, Family and Medical Leave Act, disability law, general benefits issues e.g. severance, agreements, harassment, human resources policies, restrictive covenants, WARN, whistleblower litigation, and wrongful termination.
  • Handling the defense of administrative matters e.g. OFCCP, NLRB, EEOC, DOL wage and hour claims, and state agencies, including drafting position statements and responding to requests for information.
  • Working with outside counsel to defend the Company in routine labor and employment litigation. This includes, but is not limited to, responding to claims, reviewing pleadings and motions, producing discovery, etc.
  • Preparing written summaries of legal issues and changes in the law. Develop and conduct labor and employment training for human resources professionals.
  • Formulating creative business-oriented strategies and solutions to ensure compliance with applicable law and prevent employment and labor law liability exposure.
What we look for

Required
  • Excellent academic credentials, including a J.D. degree from a leading law school.
  • Three to five years of practical post-J.D. experience in the employment and labor area. This may include relevant in-house and/or government experience.
  • Experience in employment litigation, including preparation and review of pleadings, discovery and motions.
  • General experience in traditional labor matters and/or employee benefit issues.
  • Prior experience with administrative case management including negotiation with the NLRB, OFCCP, EEOC or state EEO agencies.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills; good active listener.
  • Ability to work independently, yet still be team-oriented and collaborative.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and respond swiftly to needs of business in a fast-paced environment with competing demands for legal services.
