Re-enter, Reoccupy and Reimagine

Johnson Controls (JCI) is transforming how spaces and places are perceived and enjoyed.  JCI powers the outcomes that matter most by making buildings smarter, through a full range of systems and digital solutions, leveraging 135 years of building expertise and cutting edge technology. A smarter building is safer, more comfortable, more efficient, and, ultimately, more sustainable.

Today, we offer the world’s largest portfolio of building products, technologies, software, and services; we put that portfolio to work to transform the environments where people live, work, heal, learn and play.

Our culture of innovation and continuous improvement drives us to solve today’s challenges while constantly asking what’s next, a culture where growth outcomes are the catalyst for long term success.

What you will do:

We have an exciting opportunity for a startup intrapreneur (entrepreneurs within the JCI organization) to join the Growth Board Innovation Team. The Growth Board is focused on creating, building and launching new products/businesses at speed. We create the environment and space for our intrapreneurs to innovate in disruptive ways. We deliberately challenge the status quo and deeply-held assumptions. Supported, encouraged and enabled by the most senior leadership team at JCI, we’re a team of innovators participating in high profile, high impact, and agile programs. We’re a team of passionate, committed intrapreneurs learning, iterating and building start-up businesses centered on customer needs and feedback that will accelerate the Company’s growth and market leading offerings to customers.

This is a fast paced, ambiguous, and self-directed role, focused on using entrepreneurial skills to validate or invalidate potential disruptive market opportunities. Challenging yourself and the organization, you’ll learn as much as possible as quickly as possible, using iterative experiments and a growth mindset to get to the commercial truth. You’ll thrive on the uncertainty, be comfortable working on lean teams, working across lines of business and corporate functions in an always evolving organization. You’ll explore new cutting-edge concepts and ideas all designed to solve substantive customer problems while creating bottom line impact.

We are looking for innovators and change agents across a variety of disciplines including AI, services, sustainability and IOT. However, while knowledge of some of those markets may be useful, this is not a requirement.

This is simply a once in a lifetime opportunity to get the best of both worlds: working on a startup that improves lives, experiences and safety while being supported by the scale and resources of the enterprise. It’s not going to be an easy role, but it is certainly going to be fun, challenging and rewarding all at the same time.

How you will do it:

  • Ensure the offering is desired by our customers and can be commercialized successfully
  • Focus on ensuring the business feasibility of the product / service with the goal of maximizing revenue per customer while keeping acquisition costs under control
  • Solve for an integrated business ecosystem that can grow into a fully scaled operation at speed including building a critical internal and external relationships and partnerships

  • Pushes to evidence-based validation and decision making, willing to make changes as necessary
  • Tenacious, passionate … about the work, the team, and the customer problem
  • A naturally curious learner who has a willingness to apply a healthy risk tolerance and is comfortable with productive failure.
  • Pragmatic, with excellent financial acumen and commercial knowledge
  • Thoughtful and considerate, yet impatient for change and not afraid to challenge deeply-held assumption
  • Able to negotiate organizational bureaucracy, challenging the status quo to drive speed to learning and business results in an environment with competing priorities
  • Passionate about role modeling an entrepreneurial approach and growth mindset
  • Excited about navigating ambiguity and unstructured opportunities
  • Embrace constructive conflict, exchanging/exploring alternate ideas to drive to a better outcome. Rebels against consensus.

What we look for:

  • 6+ years of experience entrepreneurial, commercial, marketing, business development, business strategy, product development, either in a corporation or startup
