What you will do...

  

Johnson Controls (the “Company”) seeks an experienced attorney to lead its Continental European legal team as Legal Director, Continental Europe.  The Director will be based in Ratingen, DE, and will report into the VP & General Counsel EMEALA based in London, UK. The Director will have dotted line reporting to the President, Continental Europe. The Director will drive service and operational excellence of an approximately 10 FTE professional team servicing approximately $2 billion of the Company’s Continental European businesses in fields such as security and fire safety, energy management, HVAC, air systems, industrial refrigeration, building management systems, and related services and products.  The Director will serve on the EMEA Legal Leadership team with Sr. Counsels for EMEA Litigation and Labor & Employment, as well as Legal Directors for Regional Compliance EMEA, the Middle East & Africa businesses, United Kingdom and Ireland businesses, and the EMEA Industrial Refrigeration / Products and Distribution and Indirect businesses, respectively.  The Director position is a successor feeder to the role of VP & General Counsel EMEALA for high-performing leadership candidates. 


How you will do it...

  • Regular functional reporting to the VP & GC EMEALA and active participation in the EMEALA legal leadership team

  • Regular and proactive business-line reporting to the President, Continental Europe and functional leadership as a business partner on legal matters affecting their business

  • Proactive collaboration with the Director, Regional Compliance EMEA to drive “tone at the top” and a “speak up culture” to sustain a robust environment of integrity, including as a leader in the Continental Europe regional compliance committee, and in supporting investigations and remediation in compliance matters

  • Leadership, including as an individual contributor, with respect to key transactions, projects, and risk management in the businesses

  • Establishing and managing the internal and external annual legal budgets in Continental Europe to ensure efficient delivery of excellent services

  • Together with the VP & GC EMEALA establishing annual key performance indicators for Continental Europe legal team (including engagement, training and development, efficiency, recoveries and other drivers of performance excellence) and managing to those commitments

  • Proactive collaboration with the Sr. Counsel, Litigation EMEA to reduce the overall-cost of disputes and litigation in the Continental Europe

  • Proactive collaboration with peers in the EMEALA region and the broader global legal team to effectively promote sharing of best practices, stream-lining of  processes for efficiency and effectiveness, and strengthening communication

  • Effectively influencing and leading cross-functional resources to identify risks, create action plans to mitigate risks, and assure continuous monitoring and improvement throughout the areas of responsibility.  Effectively garner support for same from global, regional and local stakeholders

  • Proactively working to optimize outside counsel service quality and cost controls

 

 

 


 

What we look for...


  • Admitted to practice law in Germany with a minimum of 15 years international practice experience (including experience in an international law firm and 8+ years in-house leadership experience within an international corporation), preferred candidates will also have common law experience and training
  • Prior Regional General Counsel and leadership experience leading a Continental European legal team
  • In-depth knowledge and experience within buildings and facilities equipment and service businesses, construction-related legal issues, Continental European labor & employment matters (especially in Germany)
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory regimes across EMEA applicable to the buildings and facilities equipment and services business, construction, etc., especially with respect to fair competition  
  • Ability to work within a team framework, a matrixed organization, and across multiple cultures
  • Native German fluency and strong, business-level English fluency (preferred candidates will also have additional European language fluency)
  • Proficient in use of word processing and other data processing programs, especially Word, Power Point and Excel
