What you will do

Based in either the Boston or Milwaukee area, the Licensing Executive will report to the Vice President, Chief Patent Counsel and will be responsible for identifying and pursuing commercial licensing opportunities of the Johnson Controls IP portfolio.  This role is primarily a business and licensing development role, and the successful candidate will have a track record of establishing growing licensing revenue through his or her own business development approaches.  While the role will have a fair degree of autonomy, it is critical that the candidate be able to successfully communicate within a large organization.  Some of the best licensing opportunities will be with partners, suppliers, or customers and an adaptable communications and pitch approach will need to be leveraged. 


While the successful candidate may have a background as an attorney, this role is not primarily a legal role.  We are giving greater weight to a track record of success with business development of licensing revenue streams.

How you will do it
  • Utilize a business development skillset and strong communication skills to engage licensing targets or partners. 
  • Develop IP and technology licensing programs and define/achieve revenue targets. 
  • Collaborate with IP team to identify potentially licensable IP, technologies and associated Licensees.
  • Utilize IP team resources to establish pitch decks and materials for sale or licensing of IP portfolios. 
  • Lead license negotiations. 
  • Draft (along with an attorney) and negotiate license agreements
  • Develop system for tracking and collecting license royalties.  
What we look for

Candidates will have a track record of successful IP licensing for comparable organizations.

  • 5+ years of IP licensing background at a large corporation
  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or computer science
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Willingness to travel as necessary to conduct licensing meetings and negotiations

  • Collaboration skills to enable working closely with colleagues in the in-house IP team and with the engineering and marketing functions.
  • Ability to work with in-house and external patent attorneys to direct the drafting of patent claims to support licensing programs
  • Ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization and build strong relationships with executive decision-makers
  • Understand the IP licensing landscape and anticipate impact of trends affecting IP licensing around the world
  • Problem solving skills, self-reliant, assertive and able to drive complex negotiations to conclusion.
