Johnson Controls is hiring a Materials Engineer to work in our Cranston RI office. 

What you will do

  • Address materials and process concerns from suppliers and manufacturing.
  • Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results in order to determine root causes of problems to develop solutions.
  • Conduct failure analysis and create technical reports.
  • Conduct or supervise tests on raw materials or finished products in order to ensure their composition, physical properties, and quality.
  • Execute, analyze, and oversee chemical, mechanical and metallurgical testing activities.
  • Modify properties of metal alloys, using thermal and mechanical treatments.
  • Maintain equipment and assist in ordering laboratory supplies.
  • Perform and direct materials accelerated life testing to various industry standards.
  • Plan and carry out research projects, such as the development of new products and testing methods.
  • Prepare solutions, compounds, and reagents used in laboratory procedures.
  • Review new product plans and make recommendations for material selection based on design objectives.
  • Individual will also be responsible for maintaining chemical safety in the facility.  Organize and store all chemical substances and fluids according to safety instructions, write Job Safety Analyses, ensure all safety guidelines are followed strictly and maintain a clean and orderly environment.

What we look for

  • Four-year degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, or Material Science
  • 5 years related lab and testing experience. Chemists with a strong background in materials may also be considered.
  • Familiarity with the manufacture and applications of rubbers/elastomers especially EPDM and nitrile.
  • Familiarity with copper alloys, casting alloys such as ductile iron, CF-8M, dezincification.
  • Must have strong communication skills and be able to present research findings to engineers and other colleagues.
  • Strong background in chemistry including, FTIR and chemical compatibility between rubbers and fluids/lubricants.
