What you will do

Under the guidance of the Vice President Operations, you will be responsible for advancing lean within your assigned region in practice, adaptation and cultural integration.  Through the development and implementation of specific strategies, training and active advocacy, you will influence the organization to a new culture. You will also demonstrate success through increased operational and business metrics performance.  With responsibility for 10-20 plant sites, the work of this role will impact $300-$500M in conversion cost and operational performance dependent on assigned region.

You will also be responsible for aligning the processes, measurements, standards, and efforts across assigned region with the primary focus areas of lean and continuous improvement.

You are also fully accountable for supporting and leading the creation of an inclusive and positive organizational culture while assisting in the developing of a bench of lean skilled talent in role, and the pipeline below, that is prepared to take on larger assignments, is diverse in representation, background/experience and thought.  You will also lead in a matrixed environment to all lean leads at plant sites.

How you will do it

Support the Vice President of Operations in the development and deployment of a both a short term and mid-long term lean strategy that accelerates the progress of continuous improvement across all of the JCI Factories.

Support the Vice President of Operations in leading the consistent execution of the lean deployment plan across the Factory, Hoshin Planning, KPI Scorecard management and learning, to deliver improved and predictable business results.  Drive the applicable Johnson Controls Manufacturing System (JCMS) principles to drive the cultural transformation.

Ensure that all strategic breakthroughs and Continuous Improvement Plans are actioned through high quality plans tied to Value Stream Maps and Standard Work, and necessary KPI scorecards are in place and well managed to deliver on the key processes which are measured weekly during Tier meetings.

Develop and drive lean activities and advancements including training and execution; through word and action develops an organization that embraces lean and actively improves the operations through the use of appropriate lean methodologies and tools.

Ensure all stakeholders are aware of ‘off-standard’ issues and supports recovery plans and actions.  Drive the culture of true Gemba walks and to ensure the leadership is supporting the associates to drive high performing teams at each area of the plants.

Support the Lean Change Agents (LCA) with proven improvement methodologies to ensure successful completion of their projects.  Help drive the training through the use of Lean academies on the shop floor, benchmarking experiences, and daily CI ideation.

Identify waste and opportunities for the business to improve in (among others by using Lean principles and methodologies), as well as reporting and celebrating past successes in these areas from a business perspective.

Ensure the development and execution of the JCMS lean plans are aligned with the global JCMS drive of One Company, One standard, One Process. Contribute to the development and improvement of the methodologies within the larger JCMS roadmap.

Identify, share and leverage best practices across the region, including a drive for a technology roadmap, that may include 3D printing, digitization, google glasses, etc.

Lead the cultural change of JCI employees (from firefighting culture to working according to standards), including leadership teams in their Lean competence development by coordinating the necessary training and coaching, and build internal capabilities.  Utilize key Toyota Production System cultural methodologies.

Act as challenger and catalyst in changing leadership behavior throughout the region; respectfully challenge the status quo and act as a role model for Lean thinking.

Raise the performance and talent level in the plant through active engagement with leaders and employees.  Mentors, coaches and trains throughout assigned organization.

Assist in the selection, development, target setting and performance management of lean change agents within the plants.

Assist in raising the engagement and organizational health within assigned region; creates an inclusive culture through role modeling, setting of expectations and course correcting

Work with internal and external management and senior-level contacts to keep abreast of business needs and changes, understands and shares best practice/ new developments in the industry and operations domain for the purpose of achieving business goals and to support the smooth running of operations within the region.

Is an active and visible community participant; raising the awareness of our sites and their local impact while also increasing the positive impact the site has on the community. 

What we look for

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Engineering, Operations or related field of study or equivalent work plus 12+ years progression and related experience.
  • Senior leader with past functional expertise within Operations (running factories) and Lean
  • Leadership experience with a sizeable multidisciplinary team; demonstrated ability to lead a large a complex organization in a multi-site construct
  • Solid understanding of business planning processes and key business metrics to be achieved
  • Experience in running kaizen Gembas and thorough understanding of Toyota Production System principles and culture
  • Proven track record in change management and influencing skills up, down and across the organization
  • Expert knowledge of lean, process improvement and quality management tools
  • Project Management skills and passion for continuous improvement
