What you will do:

 Work with the Global VP/GM of Fire Suppression, Global Products, at Johnson Controls, to address most important strategic questions across the Product Business Unit. Help the business segments and regions in strategy development, working closely with leadership to ensure both cross functional involvement and real-time input as the external environment (e.g., technology, competitors, etc.) evolves. Ensure that the business strategies clearly articulate the choices, are well-defined, layout talent and resource requirements and are implementable. Successful strategy delivery should result in industry leading growth and profit margins. Help support the strategic planning process and deepen strategic capabilities in the organization. Individual should be a strategy practitioner well versed in the theory and tools of strategy formulation as well as the practical implementation of strategy within a complex organization

How you will do it: 

  • Leads development of strategy across the PBU portfolio of businesses and regions that will drive step-change in growth and performance of the individual businesses
  • Works closely with the Product leaders across PBU and collaboratively with the teams within the business
  • Identifies strategic issues, outlines a project to answer and leads the project
  • Develops PBU portfolio level strategy and priorities
  • Helps identify M&A opportunities and works closely with Global VP/GM  on vetting and execution of pipeline
  • Manages project resourcing internally and externally (consultants, contractors)
  • Lead cross-functional teams in solving complex business problems using a hands-on hypotheses driven approach:
  • Provide project management and thought leadership to project teams
  • Guide and coach project team members in using a hypotheses driven approach
  • Lead from the front by taking on complex work streams and providing hands-on support
  • Develop project deliverables and executive presentation documents
  • Lead discussion of findings and recommendations
  • Support development of robust strategic plan for PBU given current market/business conditions and provide feedback
  • Facilitate the successful development and deployment of the annual strategy development process (and calendar) working with PBU senior team, and corporate as required.
  • Document progress against previous year’s strategic plans and identify major strategic changes from the previous year using metrics, roadmaps, dashboards & actual financials to monitor plan progress
  • Partner with finance colleagues to understand the financial impact of strategic decisions and drive greater strategic focus down into individual natural businesses. Help the businesses identify and develop plans to close gaps between business financial aspirations and current strategic plans and capabilities.
  • Selectively assist PBU businesses in:
  • Identifying, analyzing, and resolving important strategic issues facing the different natural businesses the PBU. 
  • Developing timely, well informed analysis of technology, regulations, competition (both existing and emerging). Anticipate likely changes and assess strategic and economic impact of changes on today and over next 3 to 5 years.
  • Developing and documenting a deep understanding of different customer segments and their associated needs. Ensure segmentation is robust, actionable and simple for the business to understand.
  • Analyzing industry structure and likely evolution for natural businesses to inform strategy development
  • Bringing expertise and techniques (e.g., scenario planning, wargaming) designed to identify and make better decisions under uncertainty. Understand and quantify its impact across all business assumptions
  • Identifying the impact of changes in the external environment on strategy & determine potential courses of action.
  • Perform other job related duties as needed

Experience:

  • 10-15 years of cumulative business experience from general management consulting or Corporate Strategy with business development background preferred
  • Experience in Fire and/or industry businesses desired
  • Operational track record of dealing with strategic business issues including micro economics, industry structure, operations strategy and finance.
  • Familiarity with project management approaches, tools and phases of the project lifecycle.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Masters or MBA required
