What you will do

Under general direction, leads the creation and communication of the business strategic plan. Focuses on key strategic planning dimensions including geographic, technological, product, market and branding expansion/growth, market research activities, and assessment of inter-divisional synergies, alliance development and acquisitions in order to support executive initiatives.  Ensures each P&L business strategic plans contain key growth initiatives and aligns with the overall JCI strategic plan and  drives the financial results and operational strategies by conducting thorough financial analysis and measurement and sharing best business practices.  Drives the plan to include strategies that will significantly impact long-term business performance in the areas of line card development, channel development, execution planning, mergers & acquisitions and alliances, technology evaluation and management, and business analytics. Recommendations are presented to senior and corporate management for approval and commencement of action plan / investment. Drives further linkage by executing through financial reviews, due diligence, and negotiation support.

 
External Relationships:

The Director, Strategy & M&A possesses a strong network of industry peers and consultants to research and obtain information about best business practices and competitor information.

 
Internal Relationships:
  • VP & GM, to assist with the communication and presentation collateral for the Corporate Executive team, Board of Directors and employees.
  • VP & GM PBU and their teams to assist in the creation of the business strategic plan and conduct and interpret financial metrics, analysis, and share best competitor and industry best practices.  Assists with acquisition and divestiture due diligence and negotiations.
  • Director, Finance/Controller to create and drive financial and non-financial quantitative metrics.
  • Director, Human Resources to link the HR strategic plan to the business transformation and drive change management and employee engagement

Sales, Engineering and Product Development to link the strategic plan to the financial and product development strategies, processes, and metrics and share best business practices

 
How you will do it
  1. Conducts external research and financial analysis and provides recommendations to build the strategic plan.  Consults with the VP & GM to regarding interpretation of quantitative analysis as it relates to business issues and the strategic plan and offers best business practices and solutions for course correction.
  2. Prepares presentations for President and Senior Management Team to present strategy and business analysis to JCI Board of Directors and other Senior Management
  3. Creates financial and non-financial metrics to understand the state of the business and course of the plan.  Offers recommendations and analysis on course correction and seriousness and magnitude of business issues. Leads process for turning strategic discussions into actionable plans.  Develops practical implementation processes to commit the business to executing strategic goals.  Ensure strategies are focused, realistic yet challenging, and are substantially improved year over year.  Clearly identifies owners and supports same to ensure they are responsible / accountable for outcomes.
  4. Develops a strategic framework and methodology to assess core competencies and capture existing institutional knowledge as well as explore and evaluate external market, customers, competitive, product, distribution and supplier intelligence, including SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats) and gaps.  Formulates business plans/metrics addressing these “white spaces” which may involve internal initiatives, external alliances, joint ventures and/or acquisitions.
  5. Conducts external research and financial analysis and provides recommendations to build the business unit growth plans. Consults with the VP & GM to regarding interpretation of quantitative analysis as it relates to business issues and the strategic plan and offers best business practices and solutions for course correction.
  6. Prepares presentations for Senior Management Team to present strategy and business analysis 
  7. Assists with acquisitions by identifying companies that align with the strategic goals, qualifying those companies, and the conducting due diligence activities.  Assists the  VP&GM in deal negotiations.  Drives acquisition integration planning and ensures the appropriate team is assembled to execute plan once the deal is closed.
  8. Analyzes and forecasts near and long-term market and competitive trends in the industry. Defines market, channel, and technological arenas that should be explored and pursued. Works with Market Research to maintain a marketing intelligence reporting capability in order to keep abreast of market, customer, competitor and supplier trends.
  9. Establish goal setting worksheets for all direct reports and ensure the goals are aligned to BE business objectives.  Establish a coaching and mentoring cadence through conducting monthly one on ones, career development, and annual performance reviews for direct reports.  Ensure it is cascaded into the regional operations teams.
  10. Is committed and practices the core values of JCI and understands, espouses, and coaches to the dimensions outlined in the Leadership Expectations Model. 
  11. May lead team or teams of business subject matter experts to support and implement standard Johnson Controls business processes as part business system and tool deployment.
  12. Provides leadership in implementing and managing business improvement plans to align processes prior to deployments of business solutions.
  13. Supports the budgeting process where appropriate
  14. Performs other related projects as assigned.

What we look for

Bachelor’s degree and MBA required with a minimum of ten years of progressively more responsible consulting experience with a consulting firm or similar.  Past experience in leading a global team in Strategy Development, within the HVAC and/or Controls industry.  Strong financial analysis and modeling skills. Superb analytical skills with a sound intuitive ability to work in a complex and dynamic global business. Excellent customer interaction / interview skills. Strong presentation skill and demonstrated proficiency in writing presentations for global Executive audience. Comfort and confidence around Senior Management from around the globe.  Prior strong experience in conducting acquisition and divestiture due diligence required.
